I received this lovely question in my email a few days ago:

Hello, Brian
I was able download Volume 1 to my computer and already reviewed OB-GYN.
I did not see any questions on adverse drug effects, contraceptives. What question it could be? Just looking for a format of question.
Thank you

Here’s my answer to such a question
The point is to study the material that is going to be questioned the most and is easiest to recall, i.e. the biggest bang for the buck, or in this case the most points for your time.
You don’t need more time in the weeds. In my humble opinion, adverse drug effects are a third or fourth level. If they ask about them, which they very well might, the questions will be few and far between. In addition to that, even if you study them and you DO come across one of those questions, and you think, “Oh, thank god I covered this…” …then you have no clue what the answer is, because you can’t remember everything.
I don’t spend time on adverse drug reactions when studying for an exam except for TB drugs and maybe one or two others.
Contraception is the same way. How much time do you need to spend on contraception? What sort of questions do you think they’re going to ask about contraception? Knowing that birth control increases the risk of DVT is about the only question I can see them asking on the exam. (that’s a side effect that’s relevant and easy to recall). Outside of that, I just don’t see it.
TFS does not cover everything. If it did, it would be a textbook. Most of the value comes from the carving away I do for you. I grab you by the scruff of your neck and lift you right out of those weeds.

P.S. Tomorrow’s podcast is something totally different, and you NEED to hear it. After over 150 episodes, I’m having my very first guest on the show, and she is phenomenal.
