The guy who head coaches my youngest’s travel baseball team cracks me up.
As coaches, we all would get to the field about 15-20 minutes before practice would start. We always hammered home the idea of being on time, ready to play, shirts tucked in, and on the field.
The kids all just started arriving earlier and earlier to practice. It was just the culture of the team.
One practice, we’ve got 11 out of 12 kids in a full practice 10 minutes BEFORE practice is even supposed to start.
The last dad with his kid pulls into the parking lot at 5:55.The kid jumps out of the car, runs over, hangs up his stuff, and races out on to the field.
The dad says, “I thought practice started at six.”
“Only if you want to be average,” was our coach’s response. He was kidding, and he said it with a good-natured laugh, but he was right.
Average kids show up on time. Average kids play baseball at practice.
Great kids show up early. Great kids practice between practices.
How can you be above average? Just look at what average students do. Look at what average test takers do. Look at what average clinicians do.
Then do 10% more.
Be part of the 10% club, and you’ll just keep rising. Doing what everyone else is doing – how can you expect to be anything more than average?
But how do I do 10% more? I already do so much.
I know, I know. So, here’s what you do.
Work on your skills instead of just your knowledge. You spend so much time focused on book knowledge that you are likely neglecting the skills you need to apply that knowledge.
People skills, study skills, test-taking skills, personal skills, etc.
Working on those is a nice change of pace and pays HUGE dividends as you move forward.
That’s what Physician Assistant Exam Scholars is all about.
This month it’s all study skills. If you upgrade your study skills and techniques, it’ll be easy to add 10% more to your retention. It’ll be easy to add 10% more to you tests.
Let’s to do it together.

P.S. Tonight, I was talking with a frustrated student who is nervous. This unfortunate person isn’t doing as well in class as they would like and everyone around them is only sharing the Facebook version of their lives.
Here’s just one great line from our exchange.

Thank you for your email and help! People in my class just memorize and brain dumb after the exams.

Too funny. I want you to learn the material and then keep it. That’s how we save time and energy down the line. I’ll show you how in the August issue of PAES. This is gonna be great!
