What vs How

We humans confuse the two. These are two distinct issues, and we conflate them all the time. It’s a major flaw in our thinking and a major reason we don’t get the results we think we should get.

“What do you want?” is not the same question as “How do you get it?”

But we address the two simultaneously in our heads.

“I want good grades, but I suck at test-taking.”

Slow it down a bit.

What do you want? Do you want good grades? Perfect; stop there. What else do you want? Do you want to learn medicine? You want to learn to treat patients and improve their lives? Do you want to make people happy?

Let’s solidify our thinking on what we want before we throw up all the reasons we can’t succeed. As if there were only one path to success anyway, and not hundreds of ways to get where you want to go.

The “how” has to come after, not before and not at the same time, as the what. It has to come AFTER.

The worst scenario is when we put the “how” in front of the what. Then we get really frustrated and spend our time spinning our wheels.

The July issue of the Physician Assistant Exam Scholars Newsletter is going to show you the What AND the How of rotations. After reading it, you will get 10x what everyone else gets from rotations. You will go from lost, nervous, and uncomfortable, to crushing it and sucking out the marrow of your experiences. It’s going to be so much fun.
