We now have two local PA schools for which my team precepts students. We handle their surgical rotations, and I love it.
I love walking someone into the OR for the first time. I love watching them move from terrified to confident to doing cases on their own.
Yes, the better students get a lot more freedom. Most students are double scrubbed with me. Then, if they’re good, they take the primary assist position as they get closer to the end of the rotation, but the really good ones I send into surgical cases without me. They go in on their own, and it’s their case!
The better the student, the more they learn, the more people want to teach. You don’t have to be perfect – not by any stretch – but you do have to do a couple of things right.
Sadly, you can’t do your surgical rotation with me, but what you can do is get the advice I give to my students. You can get all the dirt on how to get into the best places and get your preceptors to let you actually do stuff.
I’m spilling the beans on Wed the 19th. Just two days from now.
