Last night I showed my wife the Bob Newhart clip on YouTube where he plays a psychiatrist.
A woman comes into his office and she starts complaining about how she is terrified of this and that and how it’s affecting her life and she can’t go out.
His advice? “STOP IT!”
She goes on and on and wants to talk about her childhood, and he just keeps interrupting her and telling her to
“STOP IT!”
It’s hysterical and you should absolutely go find it. His delivery is perfect.
The point here is that it’s funny because it’s true. I get a lot of emails from people who are worried about different things. They have REASONS why it’s different for them and they can’t do well.
My advice:
“STOP IT!”
“I’m too tall and the desks are uncomfortable.”
“STOP IT!”
“I’ve only ever done pathway II”
“STOP IT!”
“I don’t have time because of ……”
“STOP IT!”
”It isn’t fair that they make us take this stupid test anyway.”
“STOP IT!”
You have to take the test to be certified. If you want to be certified, study and take the test. All of the reasons, problems, and excuses in the world don’t matter to anyone but you.
I walk into the kitchen and there is milk all over the floor. Immediately my two boys launch into defensive mode and start talking over each other to make their individual case as to why it isn’t their fault.
What they haven’t realized yet is that I DON’T CARE whose fault it is. I just want the mess cleaned up. I have no interest in playing Sherlock Holmes. I just want the mess gone. The more they make their case, the longer it takes to get the mess cleaned up.
“STOP IT!”
Get to work. Get it done.
If afterwards you want to fight to get it changed, go for it. Complaining now only makes it harder for you to study. Don’t put that negative energy into your brain. Instead, be excited about all the fun things you love about medicine and helping people. Be excited that you get to learn and do all of this.
If you’ve come to terms that you’ve got to get through this, then The Final Step can help. But only if you choose to use it. Order yours now and get the digital material instantly and the physical book shipped out lickety-split.
