I received the saddest email of my career the other day. I’m not going to include the name for obvious reasons. I’m not even going to include the email because it might be a bit of a tear-jerker. Let’s just say the person failed the PANRE more than once, and is now ready to hang up their license.
Now this individual has worked hard. They have used my material as well as many other resources.
I reached out to them and recommended that they retake the exam after taking a month or so off to rebuild their ego. This is a tough blow, but I’ve had people fail as many as FIVE times before they pass.
Now that is the exception, but it is possible.
Test taking is not a skill everyone has.It is a skill you can develop, but it is harder for some people.
Admittedly, I don’t know this person.I don’t know anything about them. They may be a very pleasant, very lovely, very hard-working person. They may be a GREAT PA.And I think it’s incredibly sad to lose a great PA over this exam.
However, the tone of this email is very defeated. My guess (and I do not know this, it’s just a guess) is that this person failed before they walked through the door to their exam.
I’ve said it before.I can watch my kids go up to the plate and tell you with reasonably good accuracy if they’re going to get a hit or not.I can tell by the way they walk out of the dugout, by the way they step into the box, by the way they hold the bat. It’s obvious to me.
It’s the difference between an athlete playing with swagger or one playing back on their heels. It doesn’t seem like much, but it makes all the difference.
A guy I know was telling a story about when he was 18 and his car broke down.I mean it really broke down.He was never going to be able to drive this thing again. So he went to his uncle, who he knew was good with buying cars. His uncle gave him some sage advice: “The best time to look for a car is when you don’t need one.”
My wife had an interview for a job today. She was nervous, but not overly worried.Do you know why?She has a job.She has a good job.She is also in the process of applying for another position as well.If neither of these two pan out, it’s no big deal. I’m sure she came across in that interview as calm, cool, and collected, because she doesn’t NEED it.My advice to her was to play the interview like a game.Pretend it’s fun. That’s how you come across as confident and do your best.
I know you NEED to pass the PANCE and the PANRE, but do you?Can you set yourself up so that you don’t?
I took my PANRE in the 5th year of my cycle.I could have failed it twice last year and twice this year before it would be a problem. Not for nothing, I also have this here website that brings in some moola, so I’m not quite as desperate. My wife brings in some money too, so we would not be destitute even in a worst-case scenario. My brother in law doesn’t know it, but his basement is on my list of back up plans (it’s around #9, but it’s on there).I have back up plans for my back up plans so that I don’t ever NEED it.
My backup plans create confidence. What would you do if you fail the PANCE? Is there a plan in place? Is it that far-fetched? You don’t need intricate plans; you just need something to be able to give yourself a little breathing room.
I thought this one was really valuable to share with you.Unfortunately, I can’t come up with a snappy segue for this one so…
