I was practicing with my oldest the other day. Hitting in particular, but it almost doesn’t matter what we were doing. The kid has some skills. He is athletic and smart, No over-inflation of my own kid’s abilities here. I’m hardly biased at all.
He is very good, but he isn’t great. He isn’t great at basketball, he isn’t great at football, and he isn’t great at baseball. He’s on the cusp. He’s in the top four or five in each of those sports, but he isn’t number one. Not by a long shot.
And there’s only one reason,
Confidence.
I can see from the stands when he walks to the plate whether he’s going to hit or not. The way his shoulders are the way he walks, to me, it’s obvious. He’s either thinking, “I’m going to hit today.” Or “I hope I don’t strike out and look dumb.” And I can see it written all over him.
I would guess last season he hit close to .400 (really really good). I would also guess that with runners in score position his average dropped to .100 (really really bad). What’s the difference?
Only what’s going on between your ears.
Sound familiar? Am I describing my kid at the plate or you on test day? Do you slink into the back of the room, thinking, “I hope I do ok.” Or do you walk in excited for the challenge and sit right in the front row?
I’d wager a months pay that the only difference between you and the person killing it is confidence. I doubt they’re that much smarter. Heck, you’re probably smarter.
Confidence.
Breathe it in.
It’s difficult if not impossible, to give people confidence. We’ve tried for a generation now with participation trophies, and that flopped.
What seems to work best is overcoming obstacles, creating success, and then reflecting on those successes.
