Rumblings. All the time. Murmurs under your breath. Whispers that don’t cross your lips, but crawl in the shadows between your ears.
“This sucks.”
“I can’t believe we have to do this.”
“Why do they make us do this?”
And on and on.
We don’t fight bears or lions anymore, but we fight a more treacherous enemy. We fight ourselves all the time, and we are sneaky and relentless.
That constant nagging voice tears you down. It’s Chinese water torture for your mind.
“It’s too much”
“This is so hard. How can anyone remember all of this stuff?”
“Maybe I’m not smart enough.”
“How the hell is he done so fast?”
On replay over and over.
Your challenges are what make you. There’s an old saying: “Calm seas don’t make good sailors.” You need to be challenged to get better. You have to work to get better. If it weren’t hard, you’d stay the same person forever. I can’t think of a worse fate.
The great Jim Rohn used to say, “Don’t wish it was easier; wish you were better. Don’t wish for fewer problems; wish for more solutions.” I started listening to an audiobook this weekend that reminded me of Mr. Rohn’s words. It’s called “The 50th Law” by 50 Cent and Robert Greene. 50 Cent is undeniably a success, and a man of action and power. I picked up the book to see if I could glean any wisdom. I was just about to turn the book off for the third time. I was struggling to get through the introduction when 50 echoed Jim’s words.
“Your task is to resist the temptation to wish it were all different. Instead, you must fearlessly accept these circumstances, even embrace them.” – 50 Cent
No more complaining. No more wishing. Let’s go. You and me. Let’s get better and get moving.
