“Stop the insanity” was a line from a famous weight loss guru many moons ago. I’m using it today in the hopes that you’re taking today and tomorrow off.
I don’t care what religion you are or if you are an agnostic or an atheist. Doesn’t matter. What does matter is that brains need rest.
I’m reading “Bomb: The Race to Build–and Steal–the World’s Most Dangerous Weapon.” It’s a book my sixth grader just fished on the creation of the atomic bomb. I saw “Fat Man and Little Boy” about 15 years ago, and that’s about the extent of my historical knowledge about this time period.
The book is fantastic, and Steve Sheinkin weaves the story across continents. A sixth grader can read it, but if you’re looking for something to keep your attention and make you feel like you’re learning something other than gram negatives and rod shaped blah blah blah blah, I’d grab a copy of this one.
A German scientist had performed a groundbreaking experiment showing that firing neutrons at uranium would cause it to split and give off energy. Once that study was made public, it became obvious to physicists all over the world that a bomb of unbelievable power could be built, and the race was on.
Dr. Oppenheimer pushed his American team at breakneck speed to create the weapon that could end the war. He knew that if Germany won this race, Germany would win the war. His men worked day and night. Got up early and slept in the lab. But there was one thing Dr. Oppenheimer did not allow his scientists to do. He did not allow them to work on Sundays.
He specifically set that time aside to rest their brains. Most scientists would fish in a nearby pond or hike in the nearby hills. And, to everyone’s shock, many of the most important break throughs came near that pond or in those foothills and not in the lab.
You have to get away. You have to rest. I promise you that whatever you’re working on is not as dire as what Dr. Oppenheimer’s team was doing. You can rest. Take today and tomorrow and rest.
Then on Saturday get back to it. And when you do get back to it, do it a little smarter by being a member of the Scholar program. Then, just maybe, you won’t have to work so hard in the first place.
