We have this sense that something is going to change. Someone is going to come and save us. Girls in particular are raised on stories of a Prince coming to save them from their evil stepmother, locked tower, dungeon, life of servitude, whatever.
I have some very bad news for you. There is no cavalry, no knights on horseback coming to rescue you. Gandalf is not riding down the mountain at daybreak to save you.
No one is coming.
That leaves you. That might come as a slap in the face or as an incredibly liberating idea.I prefer the second. I prefer to embrace the fact that nothing changes without me. I’m the motive power in my life. I was out for a run today and “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC rolled across my playlist. The opening of that song goes like this:
I was caught
In the middle of a railroad track
I looked round
And I knew there was no turning back
My mind raced
And I thought what could I do
And I knew
There was no help, no help from you
That doesn’t make me sad or upset. It made me run faster, work harder. I can’t wait. I have to do it. No one can run for me. No one can study for me. No one can take your exams and no can treat your patients.
It’s you and only you.
Take that either way, but I find it motivating.
