As time goes by, you will come to understand that residents don’t know much of anything. They are mostly morons struggling to hold it together. Manage your expectations of them appropriately. They spend their days not knowing what to do and constantly being corrected for making mistakes.
Don’t be shocked when they flat out ignore you. Don’t be shocked when they don’t want to teach or spend time with you. They don’t have time or energy to spend on you in a lot of cases. They are exhausted and beaten down, so any valuable energy they spend on you comes at a cost to them.
And just as likely, they don’t know the answers. They are floundering and guessing one step in ahead of you. They know the little bit that is their job. Don’t over glorify them.
Ask them for help. Talk with them, but understand they are one or two small steps ahead of you and struggling to hold it all together. Have realistic expectations.
