Tom Peters is a big-time business guru. His book “In Search of Excellence” is what he’s best known for, but he has written a bunch of books. He speaks and consults businesses all over the world.
So what?
He said something in an interview I was reading, and I thought, “Holy sh*t,I have got to pass this along.”
You know how I like boring, simple easy things that take you incredibly far? I’m always looking for the low hanging fruit.
How can I do better than everyone else if you take working longer and harder off the table?
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against hard work; I just don’t like doing it.
I like the easy things with big impact.
Jim Rohn used to say, “When you’re staying in a hotel and you leave the room turn off the light. It’s so easy, why wouldn’t you. When you take a mint, don’t throw the wrapper on the counter. Put in your pocket. It makes the world a better place, and it’s so easy.”
That’s more my speed. What’s easy to do that I’m leaving on the table?
Grabbing my wife flowers that cost $10 at Trader Joe’s when I pass right by it is so easy. Why wouldn’t you do it?
Anyway back to our business guru.
He’s being interviewed by Tim Ferris.
Ferris asks:
“What advice would you give to a smart, driven college student about to enter the real world?”
And what does our captain of industry have to say? What high falutin complicated advise does he have for the eager youngsters?
His answer.”Good manners pay off big time”.
What?!?!?
He continues, “I’m going to assume you’re smart and I’m going to assume you work hard, but being civil, decent and kind is the bedrock of career success as well as personal fulfillment”.
Holy smokes!!
This guy gets paid thousands of dollars to consult huge businesses and increase their productivity and their bottom lines, and that’s his big secret.Good manners.
The funny part is that he’s right.I’ve seen it over and over.A student wants a chance to sew.If that student isn’t nice, it isn’t happening.
