3. An eighteen month old girl presents with her mother to your office. She has a history of eczema but no other medical issues. The mother is concerned because her daughter has had a fever of 103-105 over the last two days. This morning while getting her dressed she noticed a pink maculo papular rash on the child’s chest and back. The fever has come down today to only 101.5. What is your next step.
- You should admit her as soon as possible due to concern about continued high fevers.
- This rash typically comes at the end of the illness. Monitor and keep up up her fluids
- You will need to get some blood work to confirm your diagnosis.
- Antibiotics x 10 days.
4. An 11 year old boy presents to your office with a fever of 101-102 and rash for the past two days. The rash is pruritic. Upon physical examination see several small red macules and several lesions which have crusted over. The majority of these are on his trunk though some are on his upper arms. The patients mother is very concerned about infecting other children at at a family event this weekend. That is 5 days from now. The best advice for her is
- Chickenpox is contagious for several days before the rash appears. It is not contagious once the rash has appeared.
