The myth of the “overnight success” is one of the worst things in our society. We believe so strongly that people got a “lucky break” to be where they are.
We think:
They’re lucky that they’re so skinny.
They’re lucky that they are so talented.
They’re lucky that they got on TV.
We think success just happens for some people, but not for us.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but most people who are successful work at it, A LOT and for YEARS.
They practice and practice and practice. And then when they get to the playing field, it looks easy because of the time they already put in behind the scenes.
There is no overnight success story. There are the years of practice you never heard about before the “overnight success.”
My youngest is an amazing athlete. And I know that everyone is going to blow him off and say things like, “he was born with it.” That’s true, but what they don’t know is that he works every day on getting better.
He works every single day and has for years. Now some of his work is play, but if you ask him, he’ll tell you he wants to be better. He wants to be ready when he goes out on that field.
I know what you’re thinking. Crazy dad, right? Maybe, but I don’t think so.
Do you know what he did over the winter when he was six? He spent hours and hours in our basement shooting a nerf basketball every day to get ready for THE FOLLOWING YEAR because there wasn’t a league for his age group that year.
He works. He practices and he gets better.
Look up the bio of your favorite musician, dancer, actress, or athlete. Look up the bio of your favorite comedian or Olympian. Look at how much they sacrificed to be so good that when their lucky break came, they were ready.
You’ll be ready too, but only if you work. If you stare at the people in your class and say,
“Well, Jenny is just smarter than me,” you aren’t gonna get there. Hoping and dreaming don’t help. You need to put in the work.
That’s why I started and have continued Physician Assistant Exam Scholars. This month, we’re covering the job market. Do you think you should just be born knowing how to navigate what’s coming? The most important decisions and the highest stakes negotiation you’ve ever had? Do you think you should just wing it???
