Today, after weeks of crazy busy schedules at work actually found a little downtime to do some writing and some work for PAER… and I have no headphones with me. ARRGGG!!!!!!
I usually have at least two pairs, but today NOTHING!
I use cheap 5$ ones from Amazon so that I always have a pair around. (They’re Panasonic, and I love them). I buy 4 or 5 at a time, so they’re always handy. Except for today, when I took them out of my bag to run yesterday, and they are lying on my kitchen counter. Right there next to yesterdays mail. I can see them in my mind.
I’m sitting here trying to work, and my concentration is terrible. Ther are three different conversations pushing into my head. I can hear people walking up and sitting down behind me.
A funny side story that just hit me while I’m writing this. On Monday, I took my son up to the baseball field to get in a little practice. He has a tournament coming up, and he’s been struggling a little.
Every time a bird chipped or car went by, or a plane flew over, he had to stop and look at it before he would throw the ball back. I was freaking out at the time, and now as I’m writing this, I see why his mother says he’s just like me.
I can barely write a sentence without … (was that a squirrel) Where was I …?
…
Anyway, my productivity goes up by magnitudes if I use some tool to drown out the world around me. I used to use loud music, but anything with voices is hard. Any lyrics and I find myself listening along.
For almost eight years now I’ve been using Focus@will. They have a music selection designed to help you focus. I can sit for an hour no problem getting work done. The little built-in time dings gently and telling me my time is up. I look around dazed wondering how an hour went by so fast.
I love it, and I’m useless today without it.
For me, it’s time to order some new earbuds. For you, it’s time to check out Focus@Will.
