Climbing Everest is either inspirational beyond all imagination or terrifying. A trip to the moon has the same effect. When you look at the big picture, the big goal it either breathes life into you or knocks the wind out of you, especially if your goals are anything worthwhile.
• Bike across the U.S.
• Lose 100lbs
• Graduate from PA School
• Have a net worth of 1.5 million dollars
Inspirational and terrifying. There’s a simple solution to this problem, the scary part that is and Mark Twain may have said it best.
“The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.”
You don’t and can’t do the entire project at once. You can’t graduate from PA school all at once. You can’t build a multimillion-dollar corporation on day one. You can’t pay off your student loans on graduation day. It doesn’t work that way. If picturing the whole thing doesn’t work for you, don’t do it.
Picture the smallest first step and take that one.
• Need to graduate
• Need to pass Physiology
• Need to pass this Physiology test
• Need to review my physiology notes
• Need to take my notebook out an put in on the table
The terrible, overwhelming task of passing physiology becomes take the notebook out and put it on the table. Anyone can do that. That’s easy. It’d be silly NOT to do it.
The same thing happens when people think about paying off their loans. The numbers can be overwhelming. Chipping away at that mountain for years looks like a daunting task, but looking at the loans and making the payments is all you have to do at first. Send in the check. Then start looking at what happens if you send in a little more every month. Then look at what happens if you can get a lower rate.
But start with looking at them and making the payments. That’s step one. That’s not terrifying. Then move on to step two. You’ll get it done.
No worries, I’ll show you how to do it a little faster in the April issue of Physician Assistant Exam Scholars. Nothing sexy, just good old fashioned horse sense, and some things I wish someone had beaten into me before graduation day.
If your graduating soon, or ever or you’ve taken out money for school that you haven’t paid back yet, this issue is for you.
I don’t republish these issues. Make sure you get it before the weekend.
