Plan on using job boards for your search?
Terrible idea. Why?
I’ve talked with job candidates who are applying for jobs with 100, 200, and, in one situation, over 500 applicants. I’ve got a solid resumé at this point in my career, but even I’d have to do some pretty fancy thinking to come up with a way to stand out in a crowd of 500.
Is there any surprise when you don’t hear back from an office when you know they have 100 applicants? It would take someone a ton of time to write even the nicest “we’re not interested” email.
Nope. That’s the wrong game. That game has you bending over backward and begging for a job.
I don’t like to play that particular game. I’d much rather play a game that’s easy to win.
The job search sets the tone for everything else. You want to be confident throughout the process, not desperate. Most new grades are chasing after any first paycheck.
I’m going to show you (even as a new grad) how to have them chasing after you.
