Trying to come up with conversation starters with my kids at diner last night, I ask, “If you were a fruit what kind of fruit would you be.”
My little guy chimes in, “ I’d be a melon. Yeah, I like melons.”
My older guy quickly follows with, “I’d be a kiwi.”
“A kiwi?” I ask.
“Yeah, no one eats a kiwi.”
What kind of fruit would you be? The point is to think. To do the hard work of thinking outside of your normal patterns. We humans love our ruts. That’s one way to make a joke funny. You push people out of their mental rut.
I can be arrogant. It takes a real sense of arrogance to tell you that Physician Assistant Exam Scholars is designed to open up your brain and teach you to think.
Who wants or thinks they need to be taught how to think? You’re in a master’s level program and here I am saying I’m going to teach you to think. How insulting. Or is it?
Tom Brady has a quarterback coach.
The Yankees despite having the best pitching staff in baseball happily employee a pitching coach.
Luciano Pavarotti had a singing coach
Hugh Jackman has an acting coach and a life coach
I certainly don’t have it all figured out. I don’t even have most of it figured out. What I do is work at it. Day in day out. I just had an author recommended to me who has written 10 or so books all on thinking, and I can’t wait to dive in.
Thinking is what I do for a living. It’s what you do for a living. Let’s get better at it.
