Have you placed a Foley catheter yet?

Every student has to cross this hurdle. It’s one I love experiencing with my students. Why? Am I just a twisted individual? No. I love seeing the incredible amount of thought and concentration that goes into it. The terror and the relief.

I love walking them through how the idea is so simple. You’re putting a small tube into the bladder to drain the urine. That’s it.

We make it complicated and nerve racking. We add so much complexity to the system it becomes intimidating and overwhelming. But the idea is simple, and once you have the idea it’s easy to add in the necessary layers of complexity.

Here’s the other part I like: I like seeing people go from having no skill to being comfortable to being masters. I love training new scrub techs and new nurses on the Davinici system. I love taking the fear in their eyes and turning it into pride.

That’s also why I publish the Physician Assistant Exam Scholars Newsletter. It’s the best way I can take you along that journey without you working in my OR.

The February issue is really something. With this one, we’re going to take your studying to whole new level. Can’t wait to show you how.
