I’m no biblical scholar or theologian, but setting a day aside for atonement and repentance is right up my alley. We humans make mistakes – lots of them. They happen every single day. We hurt people. We hurt ourselves. We screw things up all the time, perhaps me most of all. This isn’t a bad thing. We need to stop defining events as good or bad. This is just the way it is. We aren’t shooting for perfect. We’re shooting for better.
What’s good or bad is what we do about it. Do you hurt someone and then go about your merry way? Do we hurt ourselves over and over and never pause to change our behaviors?
It’s important to take some time to review our transgressions and seek forgiveness. How much time are you putting into improving the way you live? We’ll spend months preparing for our weddings or our graduation parties, but not spend thirty seconds thinking about how we could be better humans.
That goes for studying, parenting, being a spouse, being the financial manager of your assets and all the other aspects that make up your day to day. Have you read a book on being a great student? Have you spent any time learning to study? Have you spent any time learning to be a better test-taker? Have you spent even thirty minutes this month thinking about how you care for you money or your relationship?
Set time aside to reflect on how things are going, and how you might begin moving in a better direction. It’s nice to have a system for improvement. A set day and time to reflect each year or even each month or week. My wife and I have a coffee date every Saturday to talk about our relationship. What’s going well, and what isn’t going well. If you’re always running, running, running, and never looking to see where you’re going, things don’t end well.
Reflection and improving is what brought Physician Assistant Exam Scholars to life. I was stunned at just how little everyone knows about studying, test-taking, looking for a job, talking to patients, memory, etc. All of these things that apply to life as a PA student or as a PA. So I decided to contribute to the conversation, and now I’m on issue #31 of The PAES newsletter. Amazing, almost three years.
If you think there’s room for improvement in your life, why don’t you join me and see if we can spend some time reflecting on where we’ve been and make some changes to improve the probability of an amazing outcome. That’s right. We’re not shooting for mediocre here. We’re shooting for amazing.
