As much as I’d like it to be, getting a job isn’t all rainbows and unicorns. You can follow every bit of advice in the November newsletter and still fall flat on your face. I make zero guarantees of success. That being said, you should know I have been credited with hundreds of PA jobs. I have been thanked for my tireless work and fantastic resources. I have been praised as the reason a certain person obtained a certain job, but still I cannot guarantee your outcome.
Every situation is different, and every application of the material is different. I’m merely a guide; you must do the real work.
So if the unthinkable happens and you are turned down for a job, here’s what you do.
Write a thank you card.
Why? Because you have no idea why you were turned down. I was once turned down for a position because the PA decided not to leave and there was no longer a job opening. They may have two candidates that they LOVE but they can only take one. Then something else opens up a few weeks or months later.
My first job out of school only existed because the person they hired showed up on the first day and then quit. You never know what weird things can happen.
So you play nice and try to stay on a potential employer’s radar.
Even better, write the thank you card right after the interview to bump yourself up a little. In fact, do it before the interview. Don’t mail it yet, but get it started. You have the person’s name and address already. Fill it out. Then after the interview, add some specifics.

Thank you, Mr. Stanley, for taking the time to meet with me on Tuesday. I enjoyed walking through the office and meeting some of your staff. Please let me if you have any questions I can help with. Thanks again, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Something simple, but something that will keep you at the top of their mind and make you stand out just a little bit. A thank you note can make all the difference.
Hopefully that won’t be an issue for you if we do our work and you follow what you find in the November issue of Physician Assistant Exam Scholars but again, you never know what weird things can happen out there.
