I did something with my wife the other day that I’ve never done with her. Since the new year is rapidly approaching, it seemed like a good time to examine where we’re headed.
50 goals. That was the exercise. Sounds easy right?
Fifty things I want. Hmm. I was exhausted after 30, and I realized I need a bigger imagination. I need to dream a little more. I tend to be content with what I’ve got, which is a blessing and a curse. The interesting thing is that, as I look around, I’ve only dreamed to be here. I’ve dreamed of a nice family that I love, a nice place to live, and a good job that I love doing AND that gives me time with family.
I’ve got all of that. Now, what’s next. And what’s next for you?
You’ve got school to finish. You’ve got a test to pass. Those are great goals. Those are goals that will suck you forward. Then, it’s find a job. Another great goal, but once you get that what’s next? When the first astronauts came back from the moon, they had problems with alcohol and drugs. Why? Where do you go after you go to the moon? No goals after.
Take a minute this weekend and think about your goals for after. After school, after the test, after the job, after the wedding, after the baby, after the big trip. What’s next? What’s out there for you. What are you going to learn? What are you going to do? What are you going to be NEXT?
It’s hard to think about the future with your nose to the grindstone, but it’s important. Imagining the future is what pulls you forward.
