Finding your Passion (aka Specialty)

Passion doesn’t strike you like a bolt of lightning.

You don’t meditate your way to know yourself and what you like.

Action is the key. Doing is the key.

A few years ago, we went on amazing trip to San Diego. We went to the zoo, the safari, Legoland, Sea World, a Padres game, and of course the beach.

Out of all of that, my favorite part was the two training runs I did around Mission Bay. Funny right? Throughout most of my life you couldn’t have paid me to run a mile, let alone run on a vacation.

Passion grows as you act. As you get better at something, you like it more. That’s the nature of things. It’s formally known as the competence, confidence loop, but that’s more than I want to get into today.

Just know that even if you don’t like something now doesn’t mean you won’t like it in the future. You also don’t even know what you don’t like.

You learn as you go. You learn what you like and just as important you learn what you don’t want.

Part of the reason you do rotations in PA school is to give you a chance to see different settings and see what you think of them. For better or worse.

Don’t close yourself off too soon. You may grow a passion in an area you wouldn’t have thought.

Speaking of rotations, I’ve got something fantastic to share with you. I just found a video I’d recorded after working with a student on her first day. It’s 10 minutes of pure gold. I just happened across it as I was cleaning out my hard drive.

I posted in the PAER app so you can watch it or listen to it there.

Just follow this link:

If you don’t have the app, that link will walk you through downloading it and setting up a free account. The PAER app is hosted by Learnistic, so you’ll see their name and stuff pop up from time to time. No worries, it’s easy, just click the link and you’ll be in.

P.S.TFS 2.0 will be available very soon.
